This verse does not say gathering eternal life, but gathering "fruit for eternal life". This is talking about having a "rich entrance into the kingdom" (2 Peter 1:11), in contrast to "being saved yet so as through fire" (1 Corinthians 3:15). I think of what Larry Moyer often says: "When I stand in that heavenly city and saints around me appear, I hope somebody comes up and says, 'You're the one who invited me here.'"
