I realize that calling this the best YouTube video on repentance is a bold statement. Of course, I can only speak from what I’ve seen, but out of all the videos I’ve watched on this topic, this one stands out the most. If you’ve seen another video that you think is better, I’d love to hear about it!
Hey, may I warn you that this documentary quotes Steven Anderson and NIFB authors. Although the NIFB agrees with Free Gracers on repentance, they also teach a lot of doctrine Free Grace individuals will reject. For example, they believe that monophysitism (that Jesus' human flesh is not like our human body, but mixed with the divine nature), monothelitism (that Jesus had no human volition), apollinarianism (that Jesus only had a divine mind) are necessary beliefs to be saved, as Steven Anderson "reprobated" (declared unsaveable) Manly Perry for denying Eutychian Monophysitism (they don't use the term "Eutychianism", but they teach the concept). They also believe that one who believes but does not make a prayer (either by mouth or in their mind) for salvation, is not saved. There is a clip where the NIFB pastor Jonathan Shelley called "believe only" a false gospel (that group uses the words "faith alone", but when asked what faith is, they say faith is prayer). They also teach that people who fall away from the faith, take part in homosexual actions, were not preached to by a "saved" missionary (which for them is mostly just NIFB missionaries, or atleast a Hylesite IFB to be saved, they would not view the average Free Gracer as saved, and even Jack Hyles taught many things they have now declared "damnable", so they are a bit inconsistent) or deny one of their weird doctrines like Monophysitism were "never saved to begin with". I have a long history with the NIFB, and when I was still a child, they prayed a group prayer for my death, and for God to cause me to become a homosexual.
Wow! Thanks for sharing. I'm not too familiar with any of that, except I was aware that Steven Anderson holds to some weird beliefs. Although we do agree with him on the meaning of biblical repentance, as you said. (And I think there's agreement with him on some other Free Grace doctrines too.) You mentioned the NIFB. What does that stand for? What is the NIFB?
The NIFB is the denomination Steven Anderson started, and yes, Steven does agree on some points, but what I have noticed is that he has gradually began becoming farther and farther from Free Grace. I found a 2009 article of his where he even said prayer itself does not save. That is a massive change from their rhetoric today, going so far as reprobating people like Diamante for denying that prayer is a precondition of salvation.
Ok, thanks for the heads up on that. I appreciate it. We need to be discerning. It reminds me of when the apostle Paul says to "examine everything carefully, hold fast to that which is good" (1 Thess. 5:21).
